Wallpapers create different ambiances for homes. Their colors and patterns improve the appearance of a room. Their tones make a single room look bigger than it is. These are only some of the benefits of putting wallcovering in your home. There are a lot more, and if you know how to choose the right one, you’ll be able to turn every room in your home into a masterpiece.
Wallcoverings come in different colors, textures, designs, and patterns. Choosing which one to use would depend on several factors – the mood you want to set, the natural lighting that surrounds the room, how often space is used, the size of the room, and the measurement of the wall, to name a few.
Choosing a residential wallpaper can be a tricky task, especially if you don’t have much knowledge in interior designing, but following these essential tips will help you get started:
Pick the right color. When choosing a color for your wallpaper, you need to consider a few things, such as your curtains, furniture, flooring, wall color, woodwork, and window treatments. Choosing the right color will maximize the effect of your wall covering. It will create the right contrast and mood. Cool colors such as blue, green, and violet make spaces look larger, while warm colors like orange, red and yellow create a warm ambiance.
Choose the right pattern. If you think you need to stick to plain wallpapers since you’ve already filled up your space with patterned decorations, you’re wrong. Yes, a plain one gives the eyes a break, but if you know how to pick the right size and color, you can come up with something extraordinary.
Some tips, choose large patterns for small spaces to create drama, small patterns in large spaces with windows, and textured ones to cover imperfections.
Mix and match carefully. With so many colors and designs to choose from, there’s a tendency to get overwhelmed. Sometimes too much excitement won’t get you anywhere. Simply putting up what you feel won’t give you the best results, so you have to be knowledgeable about what mixes and matches well. A good tip – same color or value equals coordination.
Choose the right type. There are so many types to choose from. Some of the common ones you’ll see in the market are liner, printed, vinyl, foil, flock, mylar, and bamboo. In choosing the type, you have to consider their durability. Some types last longer than others, up to 15 years or even more. Some types can easily be maintained, and some are washable. Consider these factors when choosing type.
Consider the backing. Decorating your home will already take you hours, and if you decide to put up your wallcovering the hardest way, you’ll add more hours to that, which could lead to exhaustion. To avoid this, you need to consider the backing of the wallpaper. There are three methods to choose from – paste the paper, paste the wall and peel and stick.
Paste the paper is the method of applying the paste to the back of the wallpaper and soaking it for a few minutes before hanging it. Paste the wall is the method of applying the paste directly to the wall then hang it. Peel and stick, as the name implies, is simply peeling it and then sticking it to the wall. Among the three, this method is the most practical one since you can easily remove it or replace it any time you want.
Learn the different styles. Knowing the different styles will help you create a naturally-looking space. The right type of style should go well with all your decorations, including your drapery and upholstery. So what styles are out there?
There’s the casual style, which may feature plants or floral prints; the glam style, which showcases glitters or crystals; there’s a formal style, which exudes elegance, the modern style showing off abstract and geometric patterns; and the rustic style with plaid or wildlife patterns.
Identify your purpose. If you know where you’re going to use them, it would be easier to choose which one is right. Remember that not all wall coverings work the same, so knowing your purpose is key. Are you covering your four corners? Go for stripes and hang them horizontally. Are you highlighting a particular area? Choose something bold. Are you working on a chair rail? You can mix and match paint and wallpaper to create an interesting look.
Calculate how many rolls you need to buy. The first thing you need to do to calculate how much wallpaper you need to buy is to measure the wall. Get the height and the width (in feet) of one wall and multiple the numbers. Do the same for other walls and get the sum. This amounts to the total square footage.
Scan the roll label and make sure that it’s higher than the total square footage. Most residential wallpapers come in twos, but if the one you found doesn’t, be sure to order an extra one, to be used as replacements for when you make mistakes.
