Toddlers are bundles of energy that need productive ways to expend it. With their short attention spans and curiosity about everything, toddlers can quickly get restless and fussy if their energy isn’t channeled appropriately. Here are some engaging ideas to help your toddler burn off excess energy.

Go to the Park

One of the best ways to burn toddler energy is to take them to the local park. Parks offer plenty of room for your toddler to run around, climb, swing, and explore. Go down the slide again and again, race from the swings to the jungle gym, kick a ball back and forth, or play chase. Parks are free, have lots to do, and allow your toddler to get fresh air and sunshine. Picking a park close by makes it easy to head over whenever your toddler needs to move.

Have a Dance Party

Turn on some fun, energetic music and have an impromptu dance party! Toddlers love moving to music, so let them twist, shake, jump, twirl, and wiggle to their heart’s content. Add props like scarves or maracas to wave and shake. You can make it more fun by joining in and being silly. This is a great way to get your toddler’s wiggles out on a rainy day when you’re stuck inside.

Go for a Hike

Exploring nature is an engaging way to expend toddler energy. Look for local hiking trails or nature paths that are stroller and toddler friendly. Your toddler will love checking out trees, flowers, critters, and other sights on the trail. Take along a toddler backpack with water, snacks, and toys so your toddler can play along the way. Getting outdoors provides a change of scenery, fresh air, and plenty of room for your toddler to burn energy.

Visit an Indoor Soft Play Center

On harsh weather days or when you need a break from the house, take your toddler to an indoor soft play center. These are indoor play spaces specially designed for young children, with equipment like slides, tunnels, ball pits, and climbing structures. During toddler time in Rapid City, your toddler can roam freely while getting out their energy. Many indoor playgrounds have seating for parents, so you can relax while supervising play. This is also a great option for playdates with friends!

Clean Together

Involve your toddler in household chores that double as physical activity. Hand them a duster to run around dusting everything reachable. Give them a spray bottle of water to mist and “clean” windows and mirrors. Let them help sweep with a child-sized broom. Put on some upbeat music and make cleaning together silly and fun. Your toddler will get moving while also learning to help with chores.

The key is giving your energetic toddler plenty of opportunities to be active and explore. Getting them outside whenever possible provides fresh air and room to roam. Indoor activities should engage their interests and allow them to move. Finding activities you can participate in together also helps build your bond while burning energy!

Adjust activities based on your toddler’s attention span so they don’t get frustrated. With consistent physical outlets, your busy toddler will nap and behave better.
